Overwatch 2 Update 4.17 Patch Notes (OW2 Season 20)

Overwatch 2 Update 4.17 is now available for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. According to the official OW2 Update 4.17 patch notes, the latest Season 20 update fixes ranking integrity, adds Challenger progression, and refreshes Stadium while introducing Vendetta, Overwatch’s first melee DPS. Winter Wonderland returns with prop-combat chaos, new reward tracks, and Mythic skins for Cassidy and Orisa. Today’s OW2 patch 4.17 also brings frosty cosmetics, Avatar skins return, and Shop collections expand. Gifting now allows players to share passes and bundles directly in-game.

WINTER WONDERLAND EVENT

Duration: December 9 – January 7

NEW MODES

  • Weeks 1-2 (Dec 9–22): Mischief & Magic returns with a new winter-themed Kings Row map, featuring winter props.

  • Weeks 3-4 (Dec 23–Jan 5): A new variant, Mischief & Magic Wonderland, where props can defend themselves (e.g., Rogue Kiriko can taunt/stun Genji Knights).

EVENT CHALLENGES & REWARDS

  • Play both new modes to earn special holiday cookies via challenges.

  • Gift cookies to three spirits on the event homepage for rewards:

    • Tracer the Elf

    • Santa Torbjörn

    • Junkrat Krampus

  • Rewards include Loot Boxes, Battle Pass Tier Skips, and cosmetics.

GENERAL UPDATES

GAMEPLAY

  • Saves for Overhealth: Heroes applying overhealth can now earn “Saves” for well-timed applications.

AIM ASSIST (CONTROLLER)

  • Strength: Increased by 7%.

  • New Options:

    • Extra Horizontal/Vertical Sensitivity at Max Deadzone

    • Extra Sensitivity Ramp-up Delay & Time

    • Disable Aim Assist at Max Deadzone

  • Friendly Aim Assist (Ana, Juno, Illari):

    • New option: Friendly Aim Assist Health Threshold (default 99%, so it doesn’t target full-health allies).

    • Default strength set to 100% for these heroes.

  • New Hero-Type Ease-In Settings: Separate sliders for Projectile, Hitscan, and Melee heroes in the “All Heroes” options.

  • Removed: Aim Assist Legacy Mode.

MAPS

  • Antarctica Peninsula: Disabled for 2 seasons for a rework. Expected to return in Season 22.


COMPETITIVE UPDATES

CHALLENGER TIER (REPLACES TOP 500)

  • Structure: Leaderboard ranked by Challenger Score, reset each season.

  • Earning Score: Win matches at Diamond 5+ (Core/Open Queue) or All-Star 5+ (Stadium). Gains are based on the highest-ranked player in the match.

  • Losing: Costs 33% of the potential win score at your rank.

  • Heat Bonus: Score gains increase by 5% each consecutive week of the season.

  • Leaderboards: Separate boards for Combined, Open Queue, Stadium, and each Role.

  • Requirements: Must meet a Challenger Score threshold and be Endorsement Level 2. Stadium also requires 25 wins.

  • New Features:

    • Social links for verified players on the leaderboard.

    • UI improvements: scrolling, search, “Go to me” button, filters.

    • Score visible in Career Profile and Competitive Progress.

  • Rewards: Improved rewards over old Top 500 (details for Season 21).

GROUPING RESTRICTIONS

  • Champion: Must be within 1 Division for a Narrow group.

  • Grandmaster/Master: Must be within 2 Divisions for a Narrow group.

CHEATER COMPENSATION

  • Players will periodically get Rank Progress returned for matches with a banned cheater.

  • A pop-up will notify you upon login.

  • No progress subtracted if you won with a cheater on your team.

  • System will be calibrated at the start of Season 20 before going fully live.


HERO BALANCE CHANGES

TANK

  • Junker Queen:

    • Carnage: Cooldown increased from 8s to 9s.

  • Hazard:

    • Jagged Wall: Knockback damage increased from 40 to 50. Health increased from 350 to 400.

  • Reinhardt:

    • Earthshatter: Ultimate cost increased by 9%.

  • Sigma:

    • Hyperspheres: Direct impact damage increased from 15 to 25.

DAMAGE

  • Bastion:

    • Configuration: Recon: Fire rate increased from 5 to 6 shots per second.

  • Freja:

    • Revdraw Crossbow: Damage increased from 25 to 30.

    • Take Aim: Direct hit damage reduced from 40 to 30. Explosion damage reduced from 90 to 80.

    • Quick Dash: Distance traveled increased by 15%.

    • Bola Shot: Hinder duration increased from 1.2s to 1.4s. Area slow increased from 25% to 45%.

  • Junkrat:

    • Frag Launcher: Projectile speed increased from 25 to 30.

    • Frag Cannon (Perk): Projectile speed bonus reduced from 40% to 25%. No longer reduces ammo capacity.

  • Reaper:

    • The Reaping: Lifesteal reduced from 30% to 25%.

  • Vendetta:

    • General: Recovery times reduced by ~15% for Palatine Fang overhead, Whirlwind Dash, and Projected Edge.

    • Projected Edge: Projectile speed increased from 33 to 37 m/s.

    • Soaring Slice: Max throw distance reduced from 16m to 14m.

    • Siphoning Strike (Perk): Lifesteal increased from 30% to 40%.

    • Swift Vengeance (Perk): Overhealth increased from 125 to 150.

SUPPORT

  • Baptiste:

    • Immortality Field: Cooldown reduced from 25s to 22s.

  • Illari:

    • Captive Sun: Projectile size reduced from 0.75 to 0.45.

  • Juno:

    • Mediblaster: Can now deal critical damage.

  • Kiriko:

    • Kunai: Base projectile size reduced from 0.15 to 0.12.

  • Wuyang:

    • Rushing Torrent: Movement speed boost reduced from 50% to 40%.


STADIUM UPDATES

  • Challenger Tier support added for Stadium.

  • New Top 500 rewards coming in Season 21.

HERO REWORKS (STADIUM)

CASSIDY

  • Goal: Broaden build diversity, improve underused Powers, and streamline the High Noon build.

  • New/Revamped Powers: Full House, Bang Bang, Buck Wild, Dead Man Walkin’, Hot Potato, Bullseye, It’s 12 O’clock Somewhere (combines old Sunset), Easy Rider (combines old Flash in the Pan).

  • New/Revamped Items: Snakebite (converted from old Sunrise power), Duck and Roll, Frankie’s Fixer, Competitive Analysis.

HAZARD

  • Bonerot (Power): Damage increased to 20 (from 10).

  • Twin Fang (Power): Damage increased to 75% (from 65%).

  • Touch-Up’s Touch Up (Item): Ability Power reduced to 5% (from 10%). Spike Guard damage reduced to 20% (from 25%). Duration reduced to 3s (from 5s). Cost increased to 12,000.

  • Phreak Foil (Item): Cost increased to 12,000.

ORISA

  • Restortify (Power): Healing increased to 8% (from 5%).

WINSTON

  • Circuit Breaker (Power): Damage decreased to 2% (from 5%).

  • Electro Cluster (Power): Damage decreased to 2% (from 3%).

GENJI

  • Goal: Improve build diversity and item viability.

  • Power Buffs: Forged Under Fire (Healing to 125%), Hanamura Healing (Damage to 35%, Overhealth duration infinite).

  • Item Adjustments: Buffs and redesigns to Spiked Grip, Swift-Loader, Traversal Kinetics, Sparrowhawk Feather, Slicy Coolant. Cost changes on several items.

JUNO

  • MediMaster (Power): Critical hit bonus damage increased from 150% to 200%. Critical hits now reduce Hyper Ring cooldown by 0.2s.


GENERAL ITEM CHANGES (STADIUM)

  • Reflex Coating: Removed cooldown on its effect. Health reduced to 10.

  • Nano Cola: Ability Power reduced to 15%. Cost reduced to 5,500.

  • Iridescent Iris / Champion’s Kit: Cost increased.

  • Salvaged Slugs: Bonus damage to Barriers increased to 50%.

  • Divine Intervention: Now also triggers on stun damage (e.g., Rocket Punch, Energy Javelin).

  • Gadget Changes:

    • Exo Springs: Max charge time reduced to 0.75s.

    • Med Kit: Cooldown reduced to 15s.

    • Kitsune Charm: Cooldown reduced to 20s.

    • Colossus Core: Duration increased to 5s. Cooldown reduced to 25s.

    • Necrotic Repellant: Now applies a 1s Hinder. Range reduced to 4m. Stats changed to 50 Armor & 5% Cooldown Reduction. Cost reduced to 9,000.


NEW STADIUM MAP

  • Wuxing University – Water College (Control) added to rotation.


BUG FIXES

GENERAL

  • Fixed FPS drops related to backfilling.

  • Fixed incorrect “move speed” values in the Advanced Info Panel.

  • Fixed controller navigation on hero select.

  • Fixed Ashe’s Mini-Bob health display in Stadium’s Advanced Info Panel.

HEROES

  • Vendetta: Fixed bugs allowing multiple overhead swings and interrupting the hop. Fixed missing VFX for max Onslaught stacks. Fixed Projected Edge not piercing breakables.

STADIUM

  • Fixed inconsistent Super Serum cooldown with D.Va.

  • Fixed Torbjörn’s Item Oververloader scaling with Max Armor.

  • Fixed Commander’s Clip overriding Tracer’s reload during Blink.

 

Overwatch 2 Season 20 Winter Update

New Hero – Vendetta (Melee DPS)

  • First melee DPS Hero introduced to Overwatch.

  • High-mobility, close-range combat style with lunges, slices, leaps, and gap-closing techniques.

  • Designed for tight engagements, blending agility with high burst damage.

  • Thematic focus on vengeance and precision.

  • Doomfist and Wuyang added to Stadium.

  • Full Cassidy rework implemented for sharper mid-range play.

  • New Top 500 tier added; rank system reset for the season.

  • League 6 Reaper Chase Skin introduced as a progression reward.

  • Event rewards include Frozen Demon Junkrat and Frozen Mountaineer Cassidy.

Winter Wonderland Reward Tracks

  • New three-path reward system using Winter Cookies.

  • Paths include Jingle Tracer, Krampus Junkrat, and Santa Claus Torbjorn.

  • Players complete challenges across game modes to earn Cookies and unlock themed cosmetics.


Mythics

Divine Desperado Cassidy Hero Skin

  • Mythic skin with radiant sun-themed effects, unique sound design, and customizable hairstyles and colorways.

  • Final tier adds ambient sky-glow lighting.

Capsule Cannon Orisa Weapon Skin

  • Candy-themed Mythic weapon with trinket animations and escalating visual effects on eliminations.

  • Final level introduces star-themed kill effects.


Battle Pass – Season 20

  • Includes five Legendary skins and three Epic skins.

  • Featured Legendaries: Yukizaru Genji, Celestial Venture, Colder: 76, Frost Lich Reaper, Skadi Freja.

  • Epic set includes Cold Front Tracer, Ice Crystal Symmetra, Winter Guardian Illari.

  • Ultimate Battle Pass includes Premium Pass, 20 tier skips, 2000 Coins, High Society Vendetta, and Reindeer Tracer.


Overwatch 2 x Avatar: The Last Airbender (Dec 16 – 29)

  • Returning crossover with elemental-themed skins:

Gifting System

  • Players can gift Battle Passes, currency bundles, and premium packs via Battle.net.

  • First iteration of an expanding gifting system.

Previously, a major Overwatch 2 update 3.94 added a new game mode – Hero Mastery as well as various changes to heroes, including damage adjustments, cooldown tweaks, and improvements to abilities. Today’s Overwatch 2 patch 4.17 will fix a few of these issues.
