Cities Skylines 2 Multiplayer and Co-Op Details

Cities Skylines 2 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Game Pass and PC. Unfortunetly, there is no multiplayer or co-op in Cities Skylines 2 at launch. This revelation has sparked questions from fans. Let’s break down the essential details.

The Official Words on Cities Skylines 2 Multiplayer

Developer Colossal Order has confirmed Cities Skylines 2 will focus entirely on delivering a quality solo experience. Adding multiplayer does not fit their vision.

In a recent interview, company CEO Mariina Hallikainen explained:

“Multiplayer would take considerable resources away from improving the core game. We believe focusing on crafting the best single-player city builder possible is the smartest path.”

Why Only Solo Play?

Colossal Order wants to avoid compromised features in order to create the deepest simulation possible within budget and scope constraints.

Multiplayer modes often negatively impact single-player design. By concentrating purely on solo play, the team aims to create the most rewarding experience for city building fans.

How Solo Play Will Be Enhanced

Though multiplayer won’t be included, several planned features should enrich solo play:

Realistic Weather Simulation

  • New weather effects like thunderstorms and hail will damages infrastructure and keep players on their toes.

Intricate Infrastructure Management

  • Upgraded systems for power, water, transit and waste will add layers of complexity to master.

Engaging Scenario Mode

  • Pre-made scenarios with unique conditions will offer fresh challenges to overcome.

Expanded Mod Support

  • Mod tools and Steam Workshop integration will allow limitless content expansion.

Multiplayer Still Possible Post-Launch – October 25, 2023

While not planned for now, Colossal Order hasn’t ruled out incorporating multiplayer down the road. Strong early sales and fan demand could potentially influence future content.

But for those wanting collaborative city building soon, alternatives like SimCity 4 or Citystate 2 may be worthwhile options to consider.
